That Devil Church in Town
“Do you know about the devil church here in town?” she asked.
“Whaaaatttt?” I replied.
“Yeah, the devil worship church. You know the one across town.”
“Uh…noooooo. I’m not familiar with any devil worshipping churches.”
“It’s over there, you know, by that school.”
“No. Where did you hear about this?”
“At school. Some of the teachers go to that church.”
“The devil-worshipping church?”
“Yeah.”
“What teachers?”
She names some people I know.
Giggling, I say, “Oh brother.”
“Really! They say that those teachers go there.”
Me. Giggling. Still.
“And you don’t know the name of this devil church?”
She ponders it for a minute.
“Text somebody and ask them the name of the church.”
She ponders it more.
“The Masons?” she asks more than answers.
“The Freemasons?” I ask, giggling even more.
“Yeah! Them! Everyone says they are devil worshippers and you have to be invited to be one of them or you can’t go.”
Eye Roll. Mine.
“It’s true.”
“I’m sure it’s true that people say that. But it is not true that the Freemasons are devil worshippers.”
“Well, then why do they say that? Kids all over town say that.”
“Because people love a good story.”
“Yeah, I guess that makes sense. They are either talking about devil worshipping or the Illuminati.”
“The Illuminati?”
“Yeah, but that’s mostly for celebrities.”
“Oh, you mean people like me?”
