In association with the Center for Appalachian Studies, Four Seasons Books will host a writers workshop with award winning author Karen Spears Zacharias, the former Appalachian Heritage Writer in Residence and editor of the Anthology of Appalachian Writers, Volume XI.

Unravel the novelist’s secrets to finding and developing stories from everyday encounters and experiences. Discover the key elements to writing credible dialogue and dimensional characters.

The 2019 recipient of the Appalachian Heritage Writer’s Award, Karen Spears Zacharias published her first novel, Mother of Rain, in 2013 to broad-acclaim. Mother of Rain (Mercer University Press) was longlisted for the Crook’s Corner Book Award and received the Weatherford Award for Best in Appalachian Fiction by Berea College. It was later adapted for the stage by Paul Pierce of Georgia’s Historic Springer Theater. Burdy (Mercer University Press) was published in 2015 and Christian Bend in 2017.

Karen joins West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman for an evening of words and story swapping at Shepherd University.

Marc Harshman is the 7th Poet Laureate of West Virginia appointed by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin in 2012 in recognition of his work for both poetry and children’s literature. He holds degrees from Bethany College, Yale University Divinity School, and the University of Pittsburgh. He has also recently received honorary doctorates from Bethany College and West Liberty University in recognition of his life’s work.

Mr. Harshman’s most recent full-length collection of poems, Believe What You Can, was published by The Vandalia Press of West Virginia University and was the winner of the 2017 Weatherford Award from the Appalachian Studies Association. His four chapbooks of poetry include Rose of Sharon and Mad River, MA.  Periodical publications include The Georgia Review, Emerson Review, Salamander, Poetry Salzburg Review, Gargoyle, and many others in the US and abroad.  His poems have been anthologized by Kent State University, the University of Iowa, University of Georgia, SPM Publications [London], and the University of Arizona.
