God Bless you Karen for this book and for telling Karly and David's story. I just can't stand it and wish I knew Karly and that I could have helped her in some way. You are a very gifted writer and a wonderful person. I'm so glad I was able to meet you and to buy this book. I will make a donation today for the sake of helping other children subjected to child abuse. THANK YOU for all you do for our children.

I also heard your interview on the Diane Rehm show. For those of you who want to help prevent this kind of horrible tragedy, consider volunteering as a Guardian ad Litem (or CASA volunteer - same thing). As a volunteer you are appointed by the court to advocate for a child in the foster care system. "Changing the system" is a very difficult thing to do, but you can make a real difference by working in the system. I understand that in Karly's case the system failed her.

I first listened to this story on the Diane Rehm show and at one point i was so upset that i stopped listening but later went back and listened to the podcast. I sobbed after and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. I currently have the book but i have not been brave enough to open it yet but i will. I feel haunted and my soul aches. I just keep seeing my own daughter, my only child, (now 13 months old) in karly's face and kept thinking about what I would have done or could have done if it were her. The scariest part is that I couldn't come up with many recourses that our current system provides. How could I keep her safe in this same situation? When she fell asleep I rocked her for hours trying desperately to shake the overwhelming pain and anger I feel over this. Today all I keep thinking about is what can I do? How can I help? Where do I go from here? How do i help fix our current system? I'm still not sure but I know now that I will never be able to go back and sit idly by while there are children in my community who suffer in silence. Thank you for your bravery in telling this story.

WOW; just listened to this Diane Rehm podcast on NPR. Makes me physically ill -- what a powerful and sad story. Thank you so much for paying tribute to Karly by raising awareness in this manner.

We Pray for our Children
Ina J. Hughs

We Pray for Children - who sneak popsicles before supper,
who erase holes in math workbooks,
who can never find their shoes.

And we pray for those
who don't bound down the street in a new pair of sneakers,
who are born in places where we wouldn't be caught dead,
who never go to the circus,
who live in an X-rated world.

We pray for children
who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions,
who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money.

And we pray for those
who never get dessert,
who have no safe blanket to drag behind them,
who watch their parents watch them die,
who can't find any bread to steal,
who don't have any rooms to clean up,
whose pictures aren't on anybody's dresser,
whose monsters are real.

We pray for children
who spend all their allowance before Tuesday,
who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at their food,
who like ghost stories,
who shove dirty clothes under the bed,
who never rinse out the tub,
who get visits from the tooth fairy,
who don't like to be kissed in front of the carpool,
who squirm in church and scream in the phone,
whose tears we sometimes laugh at and
whose smiles can make us cry.

And we pray for those
whose nightmares come in the daytime,
who will eat anything,
who have never seen a dentist,
who aren't spoiled by anybody,
who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep,
who live and move, but have no being.

We pray for children
who want to be carried and for those who must,
for those who we never give up on and
for those who don't get a second chance.
For those we smother with affection and
for those who will grab the hand of anybody kind enough to offer it.

Amen.

Erin: Thank you for listening. Is it very sad. It's unimaginable. But it is also very real. Karly is dead and she died a horrific death because not enough of us spoke up and fought for her. It happens everyday in this country and will continue to until we demand otherwise.

Linda: Thank you for caring. Karly was no angel. She was a child who loved and adored her father and her mother. She did everything she could to please her abuser, to make him stop. I'm not sure if it was bravery or sheer terror that silenced Karly. Please channel your concerns into something constructive. Call or write your Congressman. Demand change. Children's Service has a sixty percent failure rate. We must hold them accountable. We must fund programs for children. Children are dying.

Thank you for your tears for Karly and all the children like her. Thank you for being a good mother to your own girls. May God bless your efforts as you seek to protect and provide and nurture your children. I hope that you will use your tears to act on behalf of abused children. Demand Congress enact a national policy on child abuse. Demand that your own state mandate funding that makes children a priority. If you live in a state outside Oregon, learn about Karly's Law and advocate for one like it in your state. Abused Children don't need our tears, they need our voice. Be one as you are able.
